Cavegirls v Superheroes – 2008 Barbarians Game

In 2008 we were playing a ten aside competition and still with only three teams. As a result,  we inevitably played the same opposition over and over and over again.  Of course, we still loved the club competition but we hankered for a bit more variety and we missed the full fifteen aside game.   The solution we reached was to have a Barabarians XV game every month of the 2008 season; all the players in SA came together to form two XVs teams with a mix of players from all teams.  The standard of rugby was generally higher than ordinary club games and it gave everyone a chance to learn tricks from the senior players from other clubs.  The most memorable of the Barbarians games was “Cavegirls v Superheroes”.  We played most of the Barbarians games seriously, but in this one game the two teams were themed and everyone dressed up accordingly. It was a huge laugh. Capes were lost, fur flew, and the ref scored a try of his own.  For the record, the Superheroes won. We’re taking suggestions for next year.
